حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى الْعَدَنِىُّ الْمَكِّىُّ- وَيُكْنَى بِأَبِى عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الرَّجُلُ الصَّالِحُ هُوَ ابْنُ أَبِى عُمَرَ حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ نَوْفَلِ بْنِ مُسَاحِقٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عِصَامٍ الْمُزَنِىِّ عَنْ أَبِيهِ وَكَانَتْ لَهُ صُحْبَةٌ قَالَ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم إِذَا بَعَثَ جَيْشًا أَوْ سَرِيَّةً يَقُولُ لَهُمْ إِذَا رَأَيْتُمْ مَسْجِدًا أَوْ سَمِعْتُمْ مُؤَذِّنًا فَلاَ تَقْتُلُوا أَحَدًا. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى هَذَا حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ غَرِيبٌ وَهُوَ حَدِيثُ ابْنِ عُيَيْنَةَ.
Whenever the Messenger of God, peace and blessings of God be upon him, dispatched an army or a brigade, he would tell them, "If you see a mosque or hear the call to prayer (1) do not kill anyone." Footnote: 1. A mosque and the Islamic call to prayer assumes the presence of Muslims among the people they were sent out to encounter (whether on patrol or for defense).
